AIM To explore the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and white blood cell count (WBC) in patients with hypertension. METHODS We observed the WBC, the percentage of neutrophils, plasma creatinine concentration, blood urinary nitrogen, total plasma cholesterol and plasma triglyceride in different BMI groups of 215 cases of hypertensive patients. RESULTS The total plasma cholesterol, WBC, percentage of neutrophils and blood urinary nitrogen were significantly difference in different BMI groups(P 〈0.01, P 〈0.05). With linear regression analysis, total plasma cholesterol and WBC were identified as significant and independent risk factors for BMI ( P 〈 0. 05, P 〈 0. 01 ). CONCLUSION The BMI increase is positively related to WBC in hypertensive patients. There may be some pro-inflammation in obese hypertensive patients.
