Many Plato scholars have always insisted on the inconsistency of Republic and the tenth book of it, because they find it is difficult to understand why Socrates would criticize poetry for the second time in the tenth book and would end the whole book with a myth (the myth of Er). This paper aims to dismantle the argument of inconsistency and to show the necessity of the emergency of the two themes in question through an analysis of how the argument is built and how the plot is developed in Republic. In doing so, this paper ultimately defends the consistency of Republic and the tenth book in a relentless way, disclosing what is so characteristic of the structure of the latter, with a comprehension of the dual relation of conflict and concord between poetry and philosophy.
