For 100 years, the striking musicality of Emily Dickinson's poetry has been widely acknowledged, but scarcely studied. The musicality of Emily Dickinson's poetry derives from the joint effect of its musical vocabulary, musical images , and musical form that operate respectively on lexical, semantic and grammatical levels. Specifically speaking, the numerous musical terminology and the names of musical instruments employed in her poetry add imaginatively musical quality to her poetry; furthermore, the bird images and pure music images with musical sound-effect, and the songlike hymnal form of the poetry all directly contribute to the outstanding musicality of her poetry.
