It is well accepted among scholars, especially scholars of cultural relics that the Suanshu Shu ( Writtings on Reckoning) is an origin of the Nine Chapters of Mathematical Procedures. This opinion is based on the investigation of the similar parts of these two books. In fact, the Suanshu Shu was compiled by excerpting materials of many works, and the main part of the Nine Chapters on Mathematical Procedures was finished in Pre-Qin Period. There is no way to judge which of these two books is earlier. Thus, the similarities and the differences in the problems between them become the base of research about their relation. Statistical research shows that the amount of similar problems in the two books occupy less than one tenth of the Suanshu Shu, and less than one twenty -sevenths of the Nine Chapters on Mathematical Procedures. Most of the problems, procedures and texts of the two books are different. Therefore, the Suanshu Shu is impossible to be an origin of the Nine Chapters on Mathematical Procedures. The reason for the existence of similar problems and method in the two books is that such parts are the common knowledge among mathematicians in Pre-Qin Period.
