The definition of postoperative cognitive dysfunction(POCD) refers to memory loss and lack of concentration that occur in patients who have undergone a surgical procedure. It occurs frequently in the elderly patients ,which is a severe and life-threatening complication after an operation. This article reviews the definition, epidemiology, pathophysiologic mechanisms, etiology, and psychological tests used for diagnosis of POCD. At present, the main factors and secondary factors affecting POCD is still under controversy, what's more ,there is also many unknown domain in its etiology. The ApoE gene has no better specificity,it is necessary to seek for more ideal gene marker indicating this disease. It has great social and medical significance to study POCD.
