On 5 June the United States Maritime Administration (MARAD) organised a conference in Washington D.C. with the theme: òArctic transportationó. Given BIMCO■slong term involvement in providing information on Ice Navigation, both via our home pageand the special òIce Daysó of which BIMCO has held a number over the last two years, theChamber of Shipping of America suggested to MARAD that BIMCO was invited. TheUnited States , which is a founding member of the Arctic Council, has conducted studies thatsuggest a significant reduction in the extent of the Arctic ice coverage. Indeed, recent studiessuggest that the Arctic may be free of ice in September of this year for the first time in record.Albeit it being of concern that the global warming is having this effect it must be realizedthat it opens up for new transport and transit opportunities. A main objective of the confer-ence was to hear out the stake holders.
