The Industrial Revolution brought the prosperity to the U. S, and changed human being' s role in society as well. Humans became parts of machines, which made humans alienated themselves from each other and the whole society. The grotesques in Winesburg had much stronger desire for love than others, though they seemed very cold and abnormal in appearance. Perhaps the only way that they could get rid of the lonehness was to communicate with others, so as to understand others and adjust themselves to the society.
