The present study used Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying names stereotypically associated with male and female and their pronouns(he and she). The subjects were asked to judge whether female or male names is consistent with their pronouns or not. Scalp ERP analysis revealed the neurophysiological substrate of the social cognitive processing of congruency. Incongruency elicited a more positive P400 than did congruency in the time window 350--500 ms. Dipole source analysis of the difference wave (Incongruency-congruency) indicated that a generator localized in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) (BA32/24) contributed to this effect, possibly related to conflict of social cognition and P400 may indicated failure of semantic or sexual information integration. This indicated it is more difficult to process the pronouns which violated the sex of antecedent names. Moreover, there was gender stereotype not only in occupations but also in given names.
