The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) was detected in hepatopancreas, gill and muscles of crucian carp (Carassius aruatus) exposed to Cu(Ⅱ ) ,Zn( Ⅱ ) ,Cd( Ⅱ ), and Pb( Ⅱ )at different concentrations 24,48, and 72 hours after exposure. It was found that the SOD activities showed the similar tendency: first increase then decrease with increase in concentrations of Cu( Ⅱ ) ,Zn( Ⅱ ) ,Cd( Ⅱ ), and Pb( Ⅱ ). There was induction of the SOD activity in the fish exposure to lower levels of the heavy metals. At higher levels of the heavy metals, however, the SOD activities decreased, less and less with longer and longer exposure, as the concentration levels of heavy metals increased. There was more sensitive to change in heavy metal levels in the hepatopancreas than that in the gill and muscles.
