The adsorption of N 2 CO mixture on Ni Zn/C was investigated by pulse technique. The experimental results showed that the peaks of pulse chromatograms held constant in magnitude and retention time after the irreversible chemisorption was saturated, but the retention time of CO was longer than that of N 2. It was found that there was reversible chemisorption of CO. After the catalyst was oxidized (deactivated), the retention time of N 2 and CO was the same, and there were no reversible and irreversible chemisorption of CO. The reversible chemisorption of CO was characterized with relative retention volume and adsorption heat calculated by means of the Clapeyron Clausius relationship. The reversible adsorption heat of CO on Ni Zn/C and Ni/C was 26 6 and 31 1 kJ/mol respectively, they lay between physisorption heat and chemisorption heat. The relation between relative retention volume and turnover frequency on Ni Zn/C and Ni/C at the reaction temperature of carbonylation was compared. The more the amount of reversible adsorption is, the higher the activity for carbonylation is.
