Prior to the Opium War, the flourishing of long distance trade made Guangzhou one of the major commercial hubs in China. It provided a platform for the economic exchanges between various regions, promoted the circulation of commodities around the country, and met the needs of the market. Developed circulation of commodities in turn brought the Guangdong Customs House fat duty revenues and made it financially prominent and this further stimulated the development of the commodity-based economy in Guangdong.
