The study on floral organ development in Arabidopsis has been a hot spot in plant developmental biology for last ten years, and there is now a lot of achievements made in the genetic pathways underlying the initiation and development of floral organs, such as the gynoecium. The latest progress in the gynoecium development, as well as interaction between some ABCDE genes involved are illustrated briefly in this review. The function and genetic networks of the WUS-AGAMOUS and KNOX I genes in the gynoecium development and the role of auxin in these processes are reviewed in details.
