There are about 80 0 extant records on solar eclipses in the Ming Dynasty .Through overall computation with the modern method , we examined and analysed them. These records can the divided into two kinds. More than 1 00 official records came from the royal observatory and were recorded in the official histories. They cover almost all events which could be actually seen from the two Ming capitals while large magnitude eclipses had not been paid to with special sttention. 10% mistakes imply that some forecasts were mixed in the records based on actual survey. Roughly 7 0 0 local records came from local chronicles and private works. Of the 43 7 pieces of information among them , 70% are wrong although in many cases we can find their original form. The main interest of local records lie in total or near-total eclipses which impressed local residents very much.
