A series of Ni-Cu/ZnO samples for CO hydrogenation were studied and characterized by TPR, XPS, etc. The results indicate that there is metal-support interaction between Ni and ZnO, or between Cu and ZnO and metal-metal interaction between Ni and Cu. After reduction, Ni-Cu bimetallic clusters formed and Cu enriched on the surface. Supported on ZnO, both Ni and Cu catalyzed the formation of MeOH, while on SiO_2, both catalyzed the formation of alkanes. None of the bimetallic Ni-Cu/ZnO showed the activity of simple combination of Ni/ZnO and Cu/ZnO. The total reaction rate did not increase appreciably with increasing Cu content at constant Ni content, but, decreased drastically when Ni was added at constant Cu content. With the increase of Cu/Ni ratio, the selectivity for MeOH increased, while that for alkanes and EtOH decreased significantly. It was suggested that the metalmetal interaction significantly weakened the metal-support interaction.
