Objective: To analyse the correlation between the levels of specific IgE antibodies to the Malassezia yeasts and Candida albicans and the clinical severity of atopic dermatitis (AD). Methods: Twenty-three cases of AD who met the Williams criteria were collected in the study group. Nineteen healthy teenagers were collected in control group. Eczema area and severity index (EASI) score was estimated in the study group and the levels of total IgE and specific lgE antibodies to the Malassezia yeasts and Candida albicans were measured with fluorescence-enzyme immunoassay in both groups. Results: The levels of serum total lgE antibody and specific IgE antibodies to the Mcdassezia yeasts of AD were significantly higher than those of healthy controls. There was strong correlation between the levels of specific IgE antibodies to the Malassezia yeasts in serum and EASI score, as well as between the levels of total serum IgE antibody and EASI score. Conclusions: The levels of specific IgE antibodies to the Malassezia yeasts increased in some patients with AD and they correlated strongly with the EASI score. It showed that the Malassezia species may play a role in the pathogenesis of AD.
