The characteristics of the development of acupuncture in the 20th century are the inter-nationalization and modernization for acupuncture. It has been spreading in over 140 countries and re-gions. More than 800 diseases can be treated by it in clinics. The method of treatment has been brought forth new ideas on the basis of inheriting, and the theoretical research has been developed in depth. In the internationalization course there is and attitude to acupuncture in international society,in the modernization course there is development direction of acupuncture academic science. They will not be resolved till 21st century. In 21st century the legislation about acupuncture will be scheduled be most countries, great breakthrough will be made in the theoretical research on acupuncture and thera-peutic techniques and clinical efficacy will further be enhanced. The principal mark for its moderniza-tion is the formation of the contemporary acupuncture discipline characterized by not only preserving the theoretical system of TCM but also filling with the connotation of modern sciences.
