Objective To investigate the effect of Dibiling Nasal Drops (DND) on IL-5 level in serum and eosinophile number in nasal secretion among the patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) based on a clinical trial. Methods Included in this study were 28 cases with AR treated with DND for 2 weeks, with their symptoms and signs recorded, serum level of IL-5 determined and the number of eosinophils counted before and after the therapy respectively. Then, one controlling group composed of 22 healthy persons was set up for comparative analysis on these clinical and laboratory data to explore their correlations with therapeutic effect and the implications in pharmacological mechanisms of DND. Results As evaluated by the end of therapy on the therapeutic effect, 25 were shown significantly effective, 2 effective and only one ineffective, with a total effective rate of 96.14% in this group of patients. Before the therapy, the level of IL-5 in serum and the number of eosinophils in nasal secretion were both significantly higher among cases with AR than that in healthy controls (P 〈0.01). Following the treatment with DND for 2 weeks, the serum level of IL-5 was significantly declined among these cases (P〈0.01), nearly approaching to the level of healthy controlling group (P〉0.05), and the eosinophile number in nasal secretion was also markedly decreased, even disappeared totally. Conclusion DND may give rise its therapeutic effect on AR via regulation on the immune function of patients with this kind of lesion.
