Objective To study the changes of copper complex protein (CCP) in cancer patients. Methods After human serum was treated with ionic copper, protein zones were separated by 14% PAGE (crosslinkage rate 1%) vertical slab electrophoresis. Results A new zone was detected in the treated serum with ionic copper. In the CCP zone of 338 cancer patients, 146 normal controls, and 95 noncancer patients the percentage of CCP was 2.3±0.8, 5.8±14, 5.4±1.6, respectively. Cancer patients showed significantly reduced CCP values (P<0.01), especially in those with malignant lymphoma. There was no significant difference between the percentage of CCP in normal controls and noncancer patients. The origin of CCP was possibly related to albumin binding mercaptoethanesulphonic acid (mesna) in experiment. Conclusions CCP is of value in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients.
