Westerners in China took millions of snapshots of the various aspects of Chinese society in the late Qing and early Republican periods, thus leaving an invaluable historical record behind. Robert Fen'is Fitch, former president of Hangchow Christian College, was just one of such enthusiastic amateur photographers. The subjects of Robert Fitch's photographs about China cover a wide field, yet they can be roughly divided into the following three groups: First of all, he made a detailed study of the human geography of Zhejiang Province, where he lived and worked for nearly 40 years; Second, his photographic tour of western Sichuan and Tibetan border with two other fellow photographers, Sidney Gamble and Hillcot Arthur, in 1917; and third, a special study of the life style of houseboat people in China. The author of this paper tries to chronicle Robert Fitch's photographic activities in China. His photos will surely help us to recapture the various aspects of China's social life in the early 20th century.
