The cultivation of the lotus represents a uniquely low cost and low risk opportunity for economic development in the Black Belt's aquaculture industry. The plants can be double cropped in existing catfish ponds with minimal modification. Research at Auburn University of over 160 cultivars of lotus offers the opportunity for mass market sales of this special flower. Since 1999, the Auburn University Lotus Research Project has been working on the development of Best Management Practices for the cultivation of lotus. Currently, the plant is being explored as double crop for fish farmers, its potential for phyto-remediation of nutrients and organic compounds is under evaluation. Some of the experiences acquired through the evaluation of this multi-purpose plant are summarized.
