p Diethynylbenzene was polymerized in the presence of cobalt phosphine in diethylamine at room temperature with the yield of ca. 73 0% and the poly( p diethynylbenzene) was obtained with the molecular weight of 11 000. The polymers, being highly soluble in common organic solvents, possess the structure containing π conjugated linear polyenes as the main chain as well as p ethynylbenzene component as pendant groups and emit intense fluorescence at 451 8 nm excited at UV light in a toluene solution at room temperature.
