摘要
在五四前后纷繁的论战中,科玄论战以其影响之广、延续时间之长而在中国现代思想史上具有了举足轻重的地位,除了中西学战的角度外,论战的编纂层面以及由此而带出的论战文献版本与修辞特点也同样值得关注。一部文集的编目设计、页码安排以及出版过程即或是一种可供解读的文本,编者何以如是这般地进行编纂,这一行为本身就是一种思想与立场的表达。科玄论战文原本刊载于报刊,民国报界复杂的派系纠葛、出版家社会效应与商业利益的权衡以及学人对所办刊物的鼓吹都不自觉地对论战施加了影响。本为报刊文章的科玄论战文编纂成册后仍保留了报刊文章的若干特点,论战中修辞手段的大量运用正是由这一载体的特性决定的。
Among the vehement controversies around the May Fourth Movement,the science-vs.-metaphysics one is the most significant and far-reaching in modern history of China.Besides the different perspectives of Chinese-Western cultural conflicts,what deserves at-tention may also include the compilation of the debate articles,the versions of these publi-cations and the rhetorical characteristics in the debates.Text selection,page design and the publishing process are themselves a 'text',based on which,the compilers' way of work can be interpreted and comprehended as an expression of their thoughts and political positions.The science-vs.-metaphysics controversy is further complicated by such factors as partisan struggle in the news-medium circle,the social effects and commercial profits as balanced by the publishers and self advertising by the scholars for their journals,which all determine what rhetorical devices may be employed to attract newspaper readers,hence the rhetorical characteristics in the articles bound into volumes.
