The outstanding American Sinologist Stephen Owen has translated and edited the Norton's An Anthology of Chinese Literature, Beginnings To 1911. By establishing a family of texts with inter-textual arrangement, Owen tries to represent the continuity and variety of the long Chinese literary tradition. Besides, the anthology is a useful reference for rewriting Chinese literary history. However, as a typical Sinologist trained in the Western academic system, Owen has his own limitations in anthologizing such works because this anthology does not reveal a truthful picture of Chinese literary tradition. It is necessary for the Chinese scholars to have some responses and reflections on this anthology for a better understanding of the literary imagination and cultural application by Western Sinologists as "the other" in order to promote the equal cultural communication in the world.
