The gonad development in Lutjanus sanguineus at the age of 1.5-2.5 years was studied by histological methods. The results showed that the gonadosomatic index (GSI) during the annual reproductive cycle for female Lutjanus sanguineus was at higher level from March to May and reached the highest level in May. But GSI showed a decrease from June to July followed by a slight increase in August again, and then remained at lower levels for several months. The changes in GSI of the male was basically similar to that of the female. It was found that the annual changes in hepatosomatic index (HSI) of male and female Lutjanus sanguineus were similar and the highest in March (1.73% and 1.71% in male and female, respectively). The correlation between GSI and HSI in the female was negative except from June to August, but that in the male was positive from May to December but negative in other months. The occurrence rate of spermatogonium in testicular and ovary cells of the phase Ⅱ and Ⅲ were similar to the annual changes in GSI of the male and female. The testieular development was divided into 5 stages: spermatogonium, spermatocyte I , spermatocyte Ⅱ , spermatid and sperm, but with reference to the anatomical character, the testis was developed in the early stage Ⅳ. Oogonium, oocyte of the phase Ⅱ and ooeyte of the phase Ⅲ were found in the female L.sanguineus, but with reference to the anatomical character, the ovary was developed in the stageⅡ.
