Merchant of Venice is one of the four comedies written by William Shakespeare and Shylock is the most characteristic person shaped in this comedy. Shylock has long been considered as a villain who is characterized by his greed, cunning, stingy nature and cruelty. However,as a Jew,he is subjected to torture and thus has no choice but to become the victim of racial discrimination and religious persecution. This article is trying to explore a stereotype in literary history and discover its real-life significance through a new interpretation of Shylock in Venice Merchant, who is marginalized in society because of his race and religious belief, and consequently, such a marginalized person becomes a cold-blooded murderer, taking revenge on other people.
