This article intends to provide new dimensions to the meaning of functional health states in the human body.It is intended to exemplify the concept of ‘kilter medicine’(the state of health of an individual)in terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).The author attempts to illustrate the intrinsic factor of TCM by using the principles of ‘tong bing yi zhi’(treating similar diseases with different therapy) and ‘yi bing tong zhi’(treating different diseases with the similar therapy) in order to further demonstrate the meaning of ‘kilter medicine’. Whether an individual is in a healthy state or not initially comes from the perception of ‘not feeling well’ from oneself.Hence, symptoms are crucial factors to diagnosis and physical signs are objective evidence. However, the health state of an individual is not equal to the performance of any isolated functions organs. Therefore, medical tests and measurements only serve as references when used to determine the health state of an individual. Comparing the basis of contemporary medical approach in terms of differential diagnosis and pathogenesis, the concept of ‘kilter medicine’ is a distinct clinical system. The pharmacology used in TCM reflects the various aspects of ‘kilter medicine’.
