The mortality of patients infected with HIV has decreased dramatically after highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART),resulting in major improvement of survival of HIV-infected individuals. However, the metabolic abnormalities resulting from long term administration of ARV medications have aroused increasing attention, and hyperlipidemia in HIV-positive patients receiving HAART has represented a major concern, since it may cause a significant risk to cardiovascular disease. The advance in epidemiology, pathogenesis and diagnosis of hyperlipidemia in HIV-positive patients receiving HARRT,as well as its treatment, are discussed in this paper.
