Objective: To explore the effect of total sleep deprivation (TSD) on executive function using event related potential ( ERP ) technology. Methods: Fourteen healthy male college students participated in two trials. In the first trial they had a normal sleep and the results were taken as control. In the second trail they experienced 36 hours of sleep deprivation. In each trial the subjects were tested by five Go/Nogo tasks before Nogo-N2, Nogo- P3 amplitude and latency of ERP, and behavioral data were recorded. Results: As time points were concerned, the amplitude of Nogo-N2 on Fz electrode decreased after 12 h when compared to the baseline [ ( - 5.21 ± 2. 62 ) μV vs. { - 6. 66± 3. 19 ) μV]. The amplitude and latency of Nogo-P3 on Fz electrode changed after 24h. The amplitude decreased while the latency was extended when compared to the baseline [ ( 8.51 ± 7.34 )μV vs. ( 11.80 ± 6.70) μV; (376.36±38.68) msvs. (364.10± 39.97) ms] .interms of sleep, the subjects experienced sleep deprivation had lower amplitude of Nogo-N2 and Nogo-P3 than their normal sleep situation [ ( -4. 91 ±3. 27 ) μV vs. (-6.06±2.96)μV; (8.43±6.65)μV vs. (9.97±6.36)μV] .The latency of Nogo-P3 on Cz electrode was longer than the normal value [ (375.40 ±39.55) ms vs. (364.96 ±39. 17) ms] . Conclusion: With the prolonging of sleep deprivation, the amplitudes of Nogo-N2 and Nogo-P3 tend to decrease while the latencies are extended gradually. This indicates that the executive function may be impaired after 36 hours of total sleep deprivation.
