Objective To investigate the endemic situation of schistosomiasis japonica along the areas where the Water Transfer Project from the Yangtze River to Chaohu Lake will be built,so as to demonstrate whether the project can cause the spread of snails and transmission of schistosomiasis japonica. Methods The historical and current schistosomiasis endemic data about the entrance, midway and exit of the three possible routes of the Water Transfer Project from the Yangtze River to Chaohu Lake were investigated and analyzed, respectively. Results In the entrance sections of the three possible routes, the areas with Oncomelania snails were 13.1-327.7 hm2,accounting for 92.5% of the total area. The human positive rates of antibody examined by IHA were 1.9%-22.6%.The cattle infection rates examined by hatching method were 3.2%-6.3%.In the midway sections, the area with snails was 38.6 hm2 distributing only in the Caizihu route, accounting for 7.5% of the total area. The human positive rates of antibody examined by IHA were 0.3%-5.2%.The cattle infection rates examined by hatching method were 0-4.2%.The exit sections were not schistosomiasis endemic areas. Conclusions All the three possible routes of the water transfer project go through schistosomiasis endemic areas, with the higher endemic situation of schistosomiasis distributing mainly in the entrance sections.Considering the history snail status and the current endemic situation, the Baidanghu route is the optimal one simply according to schistosomiasis control.
