9Translation evaluation is the placing of a value on a translation, i.e. awarding a mark, even if only a binary pass / fail one. Translation criticism consists in stating the appropriateness of a transla tion, this also implies a value judgment, which need not however be a quantified one, though it should perhaps be explicitly justified for it to be of any value. Translation assessment used as a cover term for the other two procedures. The verbs evaluate, criticize, etc. and the agent nouns evaluator, etc. are used analogously.--Gerard Mcalester 2000:231.
10I will use assessment to refer to the process of gathering information about the quality of students' emerging competence ; evaluation I understand as the process of attributing meaning to the information gathered ; testing is a scientific process of sampling performance with the goal of generalizing to competence ; and marking is an attempt to sort performance along a scale. --Don Kiraly 2000: 140.
