Objective To explore the changes of renal function in healthy young men arrived at different high altitudes. Methods 10 soldiers and officers as well as other 10 ones in a troop arrived separately at 3700 m and 5380 m altitude for three months from the plain(1400 m above sea level) were served as high altitude Ⅰ group and high altitude Ⅱ group, respectively.Meanwhile, another 20 healthy young men in the plain were served as the control group.Blood urea nitrogen(Bun),serum creatinine(SCr),uric acid(UA) and cystatin C(Cys C) of each subject were measured and compared one another. Results The levels of Bun,SCr,UA and Cys C in the two high altitude groups were significantly higher than those in the plain group(P0.01).Moreover,the levels of these indexes increased with the elevation of altitude(P0.05 or P0.01).Conclusion High altitude hypoxia can damage renal function including glomerular filtration, tubular reabsorption and secretion, and the higher the altitude is,the more the impairment are.
