This paper, from the perspective of language, explores Friel's endeavor to object to Britain's attempt to translate the Irish names of the places, to reveal the cultural connotations of the Irish language, and therefore, his intention to rouse the local people's interest in the Irish language. Meanwhile, Friel's acceptance of English is far from a compromise but a sensible choice intended to fight against the British Empire.
