Foregrounding theory, evolved from Aristotle, through Russian Formalists Shklovsky and Mukarovsky to Leech and Halliday, into this theory. With the employment of it to analyze five cases in O Henry's short stories, this paper arrives at a conclusion that the Foregrounding theory has important implications conducive to the translation of literary works, to the effect that it can help the translator appreciate the deviations that serve aesthetic functions. The nature of translation, the readers' expectation and the task of the translators etc. determine that it is a must to reproduce them in the target text.
