A novel, cost-effective and environment-friendly surface modification technique, namely promoted thermal oxidation (PTO), has successfully been developed, which can dramatically improve the properties and performance of medical titanium alloys. The PTO-modified titanium implants were provided with eomprehensive improvements in corrosion and wear resistance, good biocompatibility, and excellent hemocompatibility.
