Girl,Interrupted,an autobiography by American writer Susanna Kaysen,is representative of the 'autopathographical' tide emerged in the U.S.in the 1980-90s.Telling about her experience in a mental hospital 30 years ago,the book employs the conventional retrospective focalization, yet unlike most other autobiographies,Kaysen does not imbue her past experience with any metaphorical meaning. Her voice in the book, instead,is depressed and crazy, much similar to her voice 30 years ago. This narrative voice, while helping Kaysen construct and experience her authentic self,is also a necessary result of her(illness) body writing.Girl,Interrupted, therefore, provides an excellent test case for us to explore the interactions among narrative, self and body in autobiography, particularly in autopathography.
