‘Hualiu Disease’ (the counterpart of Venereal Disease in Chinese) was well known by the public and even scholars as an appellation for Sexually Transmitted Disease(STD) in ancient yeas. To illustrate the history of the concept, literatures and monographs related to this disease have been reviewed. Originated in Japan and then imported to China as a medical term right after 19th century it indicates a specific disease due to indiscreet behaviors. This imported concept became a modernized term after absorbing theories of infectious disease and bacteria, which breaks through the traditional classification and treatment framework of Chinese medicine toward syphilis and gonorrhea etc.
