摘要
以1890年官方宣布"边疆消失"为象征性的转折点,美国社会步入了"后边疆"时代。作为一名现时主义史学家,特纳密切关注时局发展,对"西部民主"这一重要"边疆遗产"的现实处境和未来命运进行了及时反思,力主兼具有原始个人主义和国家主义双重倾向的"西部民主"传统,应该并且能够在"后边疆"时代发扬光大。这种带有很强的保守倾向的"进步主义"主张,实质上是在用自由竞争的资本主义时代的发展经验,来应对国家垄断资本主义时代的社会难题。以边疆拓殖时代的"西部民主"来再造"后边疆"时代的美国繁荣,无异于政治空想。
To some extent,the official announcement of the end of the frontier in 1890 could be seen that a post-frontier time have approached in American history.As a prensentism historian,Frederick J.Turner concentrated on the new developments in all social spheres,and gave a timely description and future prediction of the American western democracy.From the perspective of Turner,this kind of institutional legacy which was inherited from the past frontier time and combined with primitive individualism and collectivism could and should find its place in the new post-frontier time.By constructing the above progressivism plan with obvious conservatism style,Turner demonstrated to use the experiences from laisser-faire capitalism to solve the problems of the national monopolistic capitalism.While,in essence,it is impossible to resume the post-frontier-time American flourish by the political practice of this past-frontier-time western democracy.
