Trees are the most important component of urban vegetations, and therefore tree species selection is the key to successful urban greening, affecting the ecologically sustainable urban development.Based on the investigation results of phenology and growth of native and exotic tree species used for Shenyang's urban greening, the paper, after reviewing the research progress of plant phenology and physiology, denoted the phenological and physiological principle approaches to using native trees in urban greening in the hope to guide the tree species selection for urban greening in China.
