In this article, the R&D status of the sensor network and the Ad hoc network is briefly introduced. The differences between market demands for both are then analyzed. The sensor network is thought to have great application potential in the fields of logistics, intelligent transport systems, medicare, industrial monitoring, security, military and national defense, environments and disaster relief and reduction. And the Ad hoc network is thought to play an important role in communication at battlefields, emergency and temporary communication, wireless personal area network and mesh wireless local area network. Moreover, the multi-hop transfer mechanism of the Ad hoc network optimizes cellular mobile communication systems. In the end, main obstacles to the further application of these two networks are pointed out.
