This study aims to investigate the influence of acquiring a third language upon the recognition of second language words. Subjects acquiring different third languages are measured with E-Prime on the accuracy and response time in recognizing the same second language words. 60 English majors are divided into two groups based on the third language acquired:Group Acquiring French (GAF) and Group Acquiring Japanese (GAJ). The results indicated that GAJ scored higher in accuracy (X2 = 154.15 ,p =0.000 〈 0.01 ) and lower in response time( MD = 72.59,p =0.01 〈0.05) than conclusions were obtained: ( 1 ) GAF did. Thus, the following as far as the distance between a second and a third language is concerned, the nearer the language distance between a third and a second language is, the stronger inverse influence the third language might have upon the second language; (2) as for the relative proficiency of a second and a third language, the third language, even at a lower level, might have an inverse influence upon the second language at a higher level.
