Traumatic brain injury is a leading cause of death in young adults. The high mortality and longterm morbidity of severe traumatic brain injury bring huge burden to the individuals, the family and even the whole society. No medications or procedures have been proven to improve the outcome of severe traumatic brain injury. Over the past twenty years, more and more evidences have revealed that erythropoietin therapy shows the most clinical significance to improve neurological outcomes in patients with severe traumatic brain injury, and its effect is mediated by erythropoietin receptor. It is suggested that the Epo/EpoR system plays a vital role in protecting the brain.
