This paper argues that there is a significant flaw in the standard model of narrative communication proposed by Seymour Chatman, which cannot be corrected simply by finding a place for characters in his diagram because the diagram posits only a single channel of communication ( author through narrator to audience) while communication through characters operates through a second distinct channel ( author through character to audience). This paper suggests a model that recognizes the following points: (a) character - character dialogue can function both simultaneously as story (it is an event) and as discourse (it has telling functions) ; (b) the two channels of communication may function in an additive manner or in a synergistic one in which the authorial communication is greater than the simple sum of what is communicated in each channel.
