Objective To compare the effect between brilliant blue G and indocyanine green assisted internal limiting membrane (ILM) staining for idiopathic macular hole. Methods A retrospective study. Forty-four patients (46 eyes) with IMH (stage II or stage IV) were randomly divided into two groups. Group BBG (20 eyes) was underwent 0.25% BBG-assisted and Group ICG (26 eyes) was underwent 0.25% ICG-assisted ILM peeling. Main outcome measure was the chromaticity difference between the stained ILM, rate of anatomical hole closure, and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA). Results There was no difference in ages of patients and BCVA between two groups before operation (P 〉0.05). ILMs were stained well by BBG (100%) or ICG (100%) and the staining was sufficient to safely remove the ILMs in all cases (100%). There was no difference in rate of macular hole closure (P =0.926)and visual improvement (t =-0.359, P =0.721) between two groups (P 〉 0.05). The postoperative BCVA were significantly improved than the preoperative BCVA in both groups (t =-25.947, -16.595; P =0.000). There were no serious complications in all patients. Conclusions The staining of ILM by both 0.25% BBG and 0.25% ICG is well enough to peel the ILMs safely in patients with IMH, though the former yields a less well-visibility.
