As a newly arising interdisciplinary study and approach in the 1990s,gender studies draws on rich contributions made in such fields as women's studies, sociology, and feminist criticism, and is particularly concerned with the study of lesbianism and its expression in literature. This paper aims to scrutinize the matrimonial values and lesbian consciousness that are presented in No Signposts in the Sea,the last novel by Vita Sackville-West.This novel is in effect a fictional testament she left to her husband and lesbian lovers, based on her particular identity and experience as a lesbian. It indicates not only a spontaneous and conscious consideration about lesbian sexuality, but also a rebellion against the matrimonial system founded on heterosexuality of patriarchal society.
