"The politics of heritage" is one of the key issues in the international field of heritage studies. From a cross-cultural perspective, the "Authorized Heritage Discourse" that underlies Western eultural thinking and modem coneeptualization of history plays a dominant role in heritage praetiees around the globe. It brings forth deeonstruetive force to local and indigenous ways of historical remembering and values about the past. Based on traditional Chinese narratives of "guji" (literally ancient relies) in traditional local gazetteers, the paper explores traditional "guji" thinking as a cultural way of historical memory, examining its connotations, and meanings/values it endorses. It also presents a discourse analysis of two exemplary "guji" narratives. By bringing to light the differences between this indigenous way of historical memory and the globalized notion of heritage, it opens up an approach to cross-cultural reflections upon the heritage movement, and whereby calls on localized endeavors on contemporary heritage practice and research.
