Objective To explore the difference in accepted acupuncture stimulation intensity among acupuncture clinic patients with different demographic characteristics. Method One thousand patients were enrolled by cluster sampling. Demographic data and accepted acupuncture stimulation intensities were examined using a self-devised questionnaire in the patients. Result There was a statistically significant difference in accepted acupuncture stimulation intensity among the patient of different sexes, ages and occupations (P〈 0.01). Middle-aged and old adult and parous female physical-inclined workers constituted a large proportion of the patients who accepted acupuncture stimulation completely. Conclusion Patients with different demographic characteristics vary in accepting acupuncture stimulation intensity. It is suggested that clinical treatment should be administered according to the patient's individual characteristics to reduce the patient's discomfort during acupuncture and improve acceptability of clinical acupuncture.
