Objective To investigate the treatment of patients in persistent vegetative state following severe brain injury. Method Twenty-nine such patients with a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 8 or less treated in our department were enrolled for this investigation. Comprehensive treatment combining both western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine was administered for the recovery of consciousness, after which cognitive training, speech therapy and attentive nursing were carried out. Results Twent-six patients regained consciousness (86.7%), of whom 5 patients (17.2%) could afford simple work, 14 patients (48.3%) could live with basic independence, 5 patients (17.2%) could not live independently, and 2 patients (6.9%) relied entirely on others. The other 3 patients remained in vegetative state (10.3%). Conclusion With early positive comprehensive treatment combining both western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine, along with cognitive training and speech therapy after regaining consciousness, the patients in persistent vegetative state with severe brain injury may ultimately recover. The longer the patients stayed in vegetative state, the more difficult it was for them to recover and more severe the disability was after regaining consciousness.
