Objective To explore the correlation between trace elements in plasma and semen quality in patients with obesity-related infertility. Methods The CASAS-QH-Ⅲ sperm analyzer was used to analyze semen quality from 97 infertile men and 110 normal men.Levels of Zn,Fe,Cu,Ca,and Mg in plasma samples were determined using atom-trapping AAS and then relevant data were statistically analyzed.Restults Sperm density and motility differed significantly(P0.05) for men with obesity-related infertility and healthy men.Levels of Zn and Cu were correlated.Levels of trace Zn in infertile men were lower than those in healthy men(P0.01) although levels of Cu were higher.Zn levels and sperm density appeared to be correlated while Cu levels and sperm density and activity were inversely correlated.Fe and Cu levels were inversely correlated with sperm density(P0.01).Conclusion Obese patients who were infertile had significantly lower semen density and sperm activity.Levels of trace elements such as Zn,Fe,Cu,Ca,and Mg in plasma have some effect on male infertility.
