By subverting the traditional Western narration of the mythical subject matter of "Leda and the Swan", Yeats, in the poem of the same name, examines the impact of Britain' s colonial rule on Ireland. The poem, by means of symbolization, suggests that Britain' s colonial rule brought about the destruction of social economy, morality and human life in Ireland; and suggests that whether such a rule was a gospel for the Irish national culture and its growth remains largely an open question.
