As the forerunner of spatial criticism, Benjamin's interpretation on the intertextuality between Paris and Baudelaire's poems has influenced the urban research after him. While conducting his research on surrealism, Baudelaire received a kind of "secular" enlightenment. He perceived that the interpretation of surrealism must be associated with the urban landscape of Paris. He found the historical meaning of urbanization by interpreting it as the material demonstration of capitalist modernization, set up links between the historical "trashes" such as arcades, industrial architecture, and advertisement with Baudelaire's poems, and did research into the dialectical relationship between daily life and literary texts, proclaiming that the intertextuality between them called up "shocking experi- ence". Baudelaire's poems were taken as the dialectical images of modern Paris. Through deciphering Baudelaire's poems as images of materials, Benjamin explored the urban experience of the nineteenth century, and established a unique utopian aesthetics upon the wastes of obsolete capitalist commodities.
